Baptist Church, Chapel Lane, Breachwood Green

A large hamlet just beyond Luton Airport’s runway. This rather urban chapel by George Baines and Sons dating from 1904 is the only place of worship here as the parish church is some way away at Kings Walden. It replaced an older 1870s building, whose schoolrooms remain at the rear. It also contains a much older pulpit reputed to be that used by John Bunyan in the late 17th century.

School/Church (former), The Green, Peters Green

A school/church built in 1877 and disused since 1959. The hamlet lies close to Luton, although it is in Hertfordshire. The body of the building appears to have an apse and be distinctly church like. Now a house called Kirklea.

Congregational Church (Former), Station Road, Puckeridge now Plymouth Bretheren

This was until recently an independent Congregational church in this large village north of Ware. The left hand wing in the upper photos is the manse. It has recently become a Plymouth Bretheren (2023) meeting room.

Methodist Church (Former), The Street, Braughing, now under conversion to housing

A small chapel just off the centre of this attractive village. It opened in 1883. In 2021 a planning application for conversion to a house was made. As of May 2023 this is being constructed (see photoset at end of this entry)

St Hugh’s Chapel, Hare Street (Roman Catholic)

Seemingly disused, this chapel was built over the grave of Robert Hugh Benson (died 1914), a son of the Archbishop of Canterbury who converted to Roman Catholicism. It stands in the grounds of Hare Street House where he lived and which was bequeathed to the Archbishops of Westminster as a country home. The exterior can be seen through a locked lych gate on the B1038 towards Great Hormead. Apparently a brew house in the grounds (not publicly visible) was also converted to a chapel.

Birchwood Methodist Church, Brchwood Avenue, Hatfield

This small building, together with some housing recently replaced an older church of 1936 that was demolished in 2013. Prior to this the old church had been vacated in 2007, brought back into use in 2009 as the recession had stopped plans for its replacement. The worship area is  the room to the left of the porch as we look at it. It contains a communion table and stackable chairs but no fixed furnishings.
