Just off the main road facing onto the attractive riverside, a neo Norman church of 1825 by George Smith. The interior shots are taken through two layers of glass door as the church is normally locked, apologies for the reflections.

Cathedral and Abbey Church of Saint Alban, St Albans

Hertfordshire’s only cathedral was raised to this status in 1877. St Albans’ Abbey was dissolved in the reformation but the great church had remained as a parish church. The longest nave in England. The building was “restored” by Lord Grimthorpe from 1879 in an idiosyncratic style but much Norman and medieval work remains. There are many medieval wall paintings in the nave. The Shrine of St Alban between the choir and Lady Chapel has been restored.

St Paul, Pixmore Way, Letchworth

An unfinished church of 1923-24 designed by A.H. Ryan-Tennyson. The three western nave bays were built at that time, with a further two bays and the transepts added by E.R.D. Selway in 1928-31. The same architect created a north aisle by extending the  north transect in 1938-40. It stands on a prominent corner and should have had a tower and fully finished south aisle.
