St John the Evangelist, Lemsford

On the edge of Lemsford village and serving Brocket Hall as well as the village. Built for the Cowper family by David Brandon in 1858-1859. F.E. Howard added the remarkably old-fashioned Nall-Cain family south chapel in 1930.

St Nicholas, Great Munden

Completely on its own, some way from this scattered village. Redundant and privately owned and restored.  The north side is basically Norman with the wide south aisle added in the fourteenth century.

St Mary and St Thomas of Canterbury, Knebworth

The original Knebworth parish church which stands in the grounds of, and not far from, Knebworth House just outside Stevenage. The tower is 15th century and there is Norman work in the Chancel, with the Lytton chapel rebuilt around 1705 and full of vast monuments to the family. The window below is likely to be by Christopher Whall.

Holy Trinity, Hertford Heath

Hertford Heath is a large village just south of Hertford, the parish is called Little Amwell. The church dates from 1863 designed by Ewan Christian. The bottom right hand picture shows The Mission Hall built by the church in 1882 and across the green from the church. and still used as a hall for hire.

St John Evangelist, Digswell

Next to Digswell House but now incorporated in the northern part of Welwyn Garden City. A mixture of medieval (former nave, tower and north aisle) and 20th century (nave) (J. Glanfield 1960-62).

St Andrew, Buckland

On the edge of a small village by the A10 north of Buntingford. All of the 14th century, some dated glass suggests 1348, except for the 15th century tower and porch. Now redundant and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.

St Mary, Baldock

The church of a small ex coaching town in North Hertfordshire, bearing some resemblance to nearby Ashwell and mainly dating from the 14th century. It underwent considerable restoration in 2011.

St John the Baptist, Great Gaddesden

One of the largest churchyards in Herts surrounds this church in a village on the edge of the Chilterns. The chancel is 12th century and the adjoining Halsey Chapel dates from 1730. The tower was rebuilt in 1860. The Halsey chapel is full of memorials to that family.

St Stephen, St Albans

Well out of the city centre on the south side. Considerable saxon remains are found in the north wall where a Norman arch cuts into an earlier window. The chancel is Norman and the south chapel 13th century, this was only opened up into the chancel in the 20th century.  The wooden bell turret is 19th century on a 15th century wooden structure. Restoration was by G.G. Scott in 1860. The west front still shows the  end of the demolished north aisle.
