St Mary, High St, Watford

A large town centre church of the 13th and 15th centuries. The Morrison Chapel was added to the north of the chancel in 1597.

Holy Trinity, Wareside

A neo Norman church of 1840-1841 by Thomas Smith in the Babbs Green part of the village. The nave was extended by G. & H. Godwin in 1866 and a southeast vestry added in 1902.

St Mary the Virgin, Ware

Sideways on to the main street at the west end of this east Hertfordshire town. Large and mainly 14th and 15th century but much restored by George Godwin in 1852. The organ has received a major refurbishment in 2016 and the old brass coloured pipes are shown alongside the new silver coloured ones replacing them. There are a huge selection of corbels and carved headstops of which only a few are shown here.

Christ Church, Ware

Just north of the town centre, designed by N.E. Stevens 1858-59. The church was re-ordered in 2019, re-opening in November that year. The previous state is shown in the left-hand column, the current layout (Feb 2020) in the right, after the unchanged exterior views. The pulpit and choir stalls are gone, the font remains under the tower. At the bottom are a few more shots of the altered interior.

St Laurence Church, Wormley

On a side road towards Broxbourne Woods well away from the modern main road Wormley. This is a Norman church restored in 1843-44 with a south aisle added by Joseph Clarke in 1862.

St Michael, Woolmer Green

Along the main road south of Knebworth. Designed by Robert Weir Schultz, the Scottish arts and crafts architect, and built  1899-1900 and rather more interesting inside than the exterior might suggest.

Near the entrance to the North Mymms estate, well away from the main settlements of Brookmans Park and Welham Green. The church is virtually all of the 14th century and contains a number of impressive monuments.

St Leonard, Bengeo

A small norman church near Bengeo Hall set some way from the main road through Bengeo. Abandoned after the building of Holy Trinity in 1855 it was restored during the 1880s. It has its original apse and nave and also features 13th century wall paintings. A new wooden altar was installed in summer 2017), one view with the old altar is included below.
