St James, Thorley

On the edge of this village which is now virtually a suburb of Bishops Stortford. A Norman south door, with the main structure 13th century. the east and west windows are from the 19th century by G.E. Pritchett.

St Mary the Virgin, Therfield

Off to one side in this pretty village south of Royston. Largely rebuilt by G.E. Pritchett in 1878 with a tower of 1911. The east window is by John Lawson (1961) and the St Francis glass by Brian Thomas. There is a cedar wood monument of the 17th century to Ann Turner.

St Mary the Virgin, Stanstead St Margaret’s

The remains of Hertfordshire’s only collegiate foundation. The chancel is 14th century and the nave Norman. There used to be a north aisle.

St James, Stanstead Abbots

Some way out of the village, this church is now cared for by the Churches Conservation trust. The porch is 15th century, the north chapel was added in 1577. It features an unrestored interior with box pews and a three decker pulpit.

High above the road at the north-west end of the village. designed by Zephaniah King in 1880-1881,  The east window glass dates from 2007 and is designed by Petri Anderson.

All Saints, St Paul’s Walden

A 14th and 15th century church with an unusually rebuilt classical chancel by Edward Gilbert 1727. The church lies to the north  of The bury, off the main road and well over a mile north of the main parish settlement of Whitwell. The pews were installed in 2019 funded by filming of some of “Emma” at the church.

St Peter, St Peter Street, St Albans

Closing the view at the northern end of the town centre. A large basically 15th century church virtually rebuilt by Lord Grimthorpe in 1894-95. The north aisle has many reset panels of medieval glass, the south many panels of very bright Belgian glass by Capronnier. Between 2023 and 2024 there was a big interior refurbishment replacing the 19th century floor and pews and the pulpit.

St Michael, St Albans

A village within St Albans at the edge of Verulam Park. Much saxon work here. The tower and west end are of 1898 by Lord Grimthorpe. The north aisle was added in the 12th century and the Lady Chapel in the 13th century. Sir Francis Bacon’s memorial is in the chancel.

St Giles, South Mimms

On top of a hill in this rather dull village near the M25. The church contains some medieval glass panels, glass and a font cover by Comper and two large late medieval tombs. A brick north aisle of the 16th century, 13th century chancel, 14th century tower and a nave  of the 15th century. Restoration was by George Edmund Street in 1877-78.
