St Leonard, Sandridge

An unusual solid stone screen containing a Norman chancel arch of roman brick is the principal feature of the church in this village just north of St Albans. Much of the west end was rebuilt in 1886-1997 by William White.

St Catherine, Sacombe

An estate church, virtually on its own. Heavily rebuilt in 1855 reputedly with materials from Thundridge old church. There are memorials by Rysbrack and Flaxman.

St John the Baptist, Royston

A large town church in the middle of a park. The nave is the adapted remains of a Priory. There is original 13th-century work but much that is 16th or 17th century. The chancel and tower are 19th century. The post WW2 window is by Hugh Easton. The alabaster knight is of around 1415.

A fire, the cause unknown, started in the early morning of 9 December 2018 and seriously damaged the building. Restoration and re-ordering is now virtually complete and the church was opened for public inspection on 26 November 2022. The first album below shows shots from that day, further down are shots of the damaged church and then the church as it was prior to 2018.

St Margaret, Ridge

In a large churchyard in a hilltop village isolated by the M25 from much of the rest of Hertfordshire.  The church is 15th century with  a porch of 1881 by A. Billing.  There is a large 15th century St Christopher wall painting on the north wall. At the time of visiting (October 2014) the east window was away for restoration and replaced by polycarbonate sheeting.

At the south end of this very smart South Herts town. The original 1864 church (T. Smith) was extended to become the south aisle of a new church ( J.Oldrid Scott 1907).

St Mary, Puttenham

In fields at the far western edge of the county. The church dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. The interior shots are taken through the windows as the church is kept locked, hence their slight fuzziness.

St Mary’s Church, Pirton

North west of Hitchin in an attractive churchyard.  The church is basically 12th century with later alterations. The tower was rebuilt by John Loughborough Pearson 1876-77.

A small 19th century chapel of 1855 by G.E. Pritchett near the Henry Moore Foundation, the churchyard has a gravestone to him.

St Thomas a Becket, Northaw

A large church built in 1881 by C Kirk & Sons of Sleaford, Lincolnshire. It replaced a church of 1809 which had replaced a medieval church all on the same site.
