Bengeo is now a northern suburb of Hertford. It boasts two churches, the old parish church and a 19th century addition on the main road. Designed by Benjamin Ferrey (1855). Built of Kentish rag it would look more at home in London than Hertfordshire

Designed by Henry Woodyer (1870-1871) replacing a church of 1804. It sits at the northern edge of this village a few miles south of Hertford. There are chancel wall decorations of 1890 designed by Sidney Gambier-Parry and carried out by Heaton, Butler & Bayne. Glass by Clayton and Bell and Kempe.

A former coaching village with a an attractive wide high street, the church lying to one side. the chancel is 13th century, the rest 16th century but all heavily restored in 1861. The window at the east end of the south aisle has considerable sections of a medieval tree of Jesse.

Ayot St Peter is little more than a hamlet west of Welwyn. John Loughborough Pearson designed a church on the medieval a site about half a mile away where there is still a graveyard (see final pictures), that burnt down a few years after in 1874 . The present “arts and crafts” church was designed by J.P. Seddon and built in 1875 and features many contemporary fittings, including the font, lectern, pulpit and much of the glass and chancel ceiling to Seddon’s designs. The screen is a later edition from 1908.

Ayot St Lawrence is a tiny village but it boasts two churches, one now a stabilised ruin and one from the 18th century that was built partly as a landscape feature.The new church was designed by Nicolas Revett in a Grecian style for the local landowner Sir Lionel Lyde and built in 1778-9.

Just outside Buntingford. The church overlooks fields at the western end of the village on a dead end road. Restored in 1873 by Sir Arthur Blomfield. A south-east chapel contains box pews, and a large monument including coloured brasses which is, unfortunately, used for storage. The Morris glass illustrated first is in the unlocked porch.

One of the largest and most attractive villages in North Hertfordshire. This is also one of the largest and most impressive village parish churches in the county, reflecting its medieval prosperity. It is virtually all of the 14th century. In the tower is some well known inscribed graffiti showing the old St Paul’s cathedral. The clerestory contains some medieval glass.

A surprisingly high church for a village church. The church features a 1920s rood and rood loft (by F.C. Eden) and six candles on the altar. Mainly 14th century, but with an earlier chancel. 19th century restoration was by Gilbert Scott in 1858 and J.T. Micklethwaite and Somers Clarke 1887-91.

In remote north east Herts. The tower is 12th century, the chancel and transepts 13th century. Restoration in 1869-72 was by William Butterfield. The church has an unusual Norman “mermen” font. The memorial window to pilots from the nearby USAF airfield is by Patrick Reyntiens.
