Down a side street a church by William Butterfield 1863-1865. The aisles were added in 1880-1883.

St Peter, Berkhamsted
Sideways on to the main street of this small west Hertfordshire town. The chancel is from around 1200, the nave late 13th century, the vaulted eastern aisle of the north transept is from around 1300 and the south chancel chapel 14th century. A large cruciform church , reordered 1956-60 by Robert Neil so that the chancel is now virtually unused with the altar under the crossing. Restored by William Butterfield in 1871.

St Margaret of Antioch, Barley
South of Royston, a village best known for its overhead pub sign and a coach depot in the middle of the village. The church is by William Butterfield (1871-1872) apart from the lower tower which is Norman and the south arcade.

St George, Anstey
In remote north east Herts. The tower is 12th century, the chancel and transepts 13th century. Restoration in 1869-72 was by William Butterfield. The church has an unusual Norman “mermen” font. The memorial window to pilots from the nearby USAF airfield is by Patrick Reyntiens.
