Our Lady, Queen of Apostles, Welwyn Garden City (Roman Catholic)

Serving south and east Welwyn Garden City and built in 1959-60 to designs by Archard and Partners, It is a prominent landmark in the Woodhall district. The interior was re-ordered in 1980s with new sanctuary furniture and fibreglass windows by Carmel Cauchi. The east window glass of 1969 was removed and relocated to the south transept and the decorative ceiling pattern installed. In 2011 new glass by Matthew Lloyd Winder was installed in the aisle windows.

St Bonaventure, Parkway, Welwyn Garden City (Roman Catholic)

The Roman Catholic church for central Welwyn Garden City, facing the attractive green surrounded by Parkway.It was designed by T.H.B. Scott and opened in 1926

Christ the King, Haldens, Welwyn Garden City

In northern Welwyn Garden City, it would be easy to miss without the cross and bell outside. In 2014 the cross was removed owing to rotting but renovations should see it restored. The building dates from 1964 and was a design by Riley & Glanfield.

St Michael and All Angels (former), Welwyn Garden City

Opened in 1936 as a temporary church, plans for a permanent church never came to fruition and it remains now as part of a council day centre complex opened in 1982.

All Saints, Welwyn Garden City

Built in 1960-61, it became a diocesan education centre in 1974, but reverted to use as church in 2007. It is mainly used as a hall with some midweek services.

Marychurch, Batterdale Old Hatfield (Roman Catholic)

At the base of the hill below Hatfield House in Old Hatfield, this circular church dates from 1969-70 and is by George Mathers of Mathers, Thomas and Associates. The previous church (St Theresa) of 1929 is now its hall. The interior glows with dalle de verre glass made by Charles Norris of Buckfast Abbey.

St Peter, Bishops Rise, South Hatfield (Roman Catholic)

On Bishop’s Rise down the hill from St John’s and much less imposing. It was built in 1961 to designs by T.J. Denny, but cracking led to the walls and roof being lowered in 1987.

St John, Hilltop, South Hatfield

An “A frame” structure designed by Peter Bosanquet 1958-60 in the centre of the large South Hatfield estate. The whole building is subtly asymmetrical creating some intriguing visual effects outside and especially inside.
